Our Golfing History

The Bristol Electric Club proudly holds four prestigious golf trophies, each carrying decades of history, tradition, and sporting achievement within the Club.

The Mitchell Cup

First contested in 1928, the Mitchell Cup quickly became one of the Club’s most respected competitions. The tournament was played annually until competitions paused between 1939 and 1945 during World War II, before resuming in 1946. The trophy continued to be competed for until it was last played in 1999.

The Chairman’s Cup

The Chairman’s Cup was first introduced in 1933 and became a firm fixture in the Club calendar. Like many sporting events of the time, competitions were suspended during World War II between 1939 and 1944, resuming again in 1945. The cup continued to be played annually from 1946 through to 2017, with the final winner crowned in 2017. No golf competitions were held in 2018 or 2019.

The Foursomes Cup

First played for in 1934, the Foursomes Cup has a proud and enduring history within the Club. Competitions paused during World War II from 1939 to 1944 before returning in 1945. The trophy was contested every year from 1946 until 1999. Following a three-year break in competitions, the format was revised in 2003, transforming the event from an individual competition into a team event.

The Baker Cup

Introduced in 1935, the Baker Cup has seen several chapters throughout its history. Competition was suspended during the war years between 1938 and 1947, before returning in 1947. The cup was then contested regularly until 1955, followed by another pause between 1956 and 1962. From 1962 until 1999, the competition was held annually. In 2003, after a further three-year break, the trophy format was changed from an individual competition to a team event, continuing its legacy within the Club.

Together, these trophies represent nearly a century of camaraderie, competition, and tradition at the Bristol Electric Club, reflecting the rich sporting heritage that continues to be celebrated today.
